Jean-Joseph CHAPUIS (1765-1864) - Royaume uni des Pays-bas (actuelle Belgique), vers 1825, (Influence des styles Empire, Restauration, Biedermeier et Regency)
Large pedestal table on a tripod of little fingers with heads of sea monsters tied together by a rope that also encloses leaves and reeds, stained and gilded wood. The mahogany veneer belt is adorned with ormolu Minerva heads.
The shelf, which is original, is in veined molded black marble studded with white.
It bears two CHAPUIS stamps.
On period brass castors. H. 71.5 x Diam 97 cm.
Note: Models with similar legs are included in the collection of the Musée Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire de Bruxelles and have passed through the art market (Millon in 2019, Sotheby's in 2004).
Biographical note: Trained in Paris, where he was awarded the title of Master in 1796, he returned to Brussels, where he produced furniture until 1830. He delivered furniture to the Château de Laeken.
Minor old restoration to the marble. Two leaves to be restored.
