Abraham GOVAERTS (1589-1626), attribué à - Lot 272
Abraham GOVAERTS (1589-1626), attribué à Landscape animated with a genre scene. Oil on oak panel. 34.3 x 48.6 cm. Note: Abraham Govaerts was born in Antwerp where his father was an art dealer. There is no information about his education. Because of the influence exerted on his early work by Jan Brueghel the Elder, some believe he may have apprenticed in the latter's studio, but there is no evidence of this. He joined the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1699. He held the rank of dean of the guild in 1623. Alexander Keirincx, Nicolaes Aertsens and Gysbrecht van der Berch were his pupils. The inventory of his estate mentions numerous unfinished works, which were later added to by A. II Francken, Frans II Francken, Jasper van der Lanen (whose marriage he witnessed in 1624) and Hans Jordaens. His works are dated between 1612 and 1626. (Cleaning of the painting by Paul Bouquette, restorer in Brussels)
