Green Tara, bronze statuette, early 19th century. Height +/- 15 cm. Note: Tara (literally "The Liberator") is, along with Avalokiteshvara, Tibet's most popular deity. She is a female bodhisattva, the country's tutelary deity and embodiment of compassion, the "mother" who protects from all dangers and difficulties of life. She was born of Avalokiteshvara's tears at the suffering of beings trapped in the cycle of reincarnation. Shyama Tara ("Green Tara") is the original Tara, from which my twenty-one other forms derive, for green can represent all other colors. She embodies active compassion, and is depicted with her right leg half-unfolded, as she is ready to rise up and go to the aid of beings.
