Nicolas POUSSIN (1594-1665) after - Lot 29
Nicolas POUSSIN (1594-1665) after "The Israelites Gathering Manna in the Desert", or "The Harvest of Manna", after Poussin, oil on panel. 72 x 98 cm. Needs cleaning. Note: The painting depicts the episode of the manna harvest described in the Book of Exodus: in order to feed the Hebrews in the desert, God causes a granular substance to appear on the ground every morning (Ex 16:14). The composition shows the Hebrew people in the foreground, in which several groups can be recognized. In the background, a mostly cloudy landscape reveals the morning light on the horizon.
