Helena WOLFSOHN (act.c.1875-1883) - Lot 122
Helena WOLFSOHN (act.c.1875-1883)
Pair of small covered vases with Watteau decoration, mark AR for Helena Wolfsohn (Augustus Rex) worn mark ca. 1879 - 1880. H +-12.5cm.
Note: Helena Wolfsohn succeeded her father, who ran a porcelain business under the name L. Meyer & Söhne. She bought white porcelain, mainly from Meissen, and decorated it in the style of the earliest Meissen pieces by Johann Gregorius Höroldt. It was also inspired by the paintings of Watteau. In 1878, the company was taken over by Helena's daughter, Emilie Elb. The following year, problems began. The Meissen factory sued them for using the AR (Augustus Rex) trademark. In 1881, the studio was forced to stop using the trademark in Germany, and in 1883 in England. Compensation for the illegal use of the trademark was so high that the studio almost lost its liquidity.
