LALIQUE - Lot 219
LALIQUE
"Walking Lion" in crystal, from the "Bamara" series, signed Lalique France, L +-30cm.
Note: It was after a trip to Africa that Marie-Claude Lalique enriched the family bestiary with animals such as lions and panthers. For this work, she chose the name Bamara, the name of a town in the Central African Republic. In Sango, the main language spoken in this country, Bamara means lion. Bamara ghia tè asa kuè: the lion is the king of all animals. Originally created in colorless crystal, the Bamara lion was later declined in black or amber. The lion motif can be found in other creations by Marie-Claude Lalique, such as the Trois lionnes table (1992) and the Kora sconces (1993). Even today, the king of animals still inspires dreams in crystal: in 2018, Lalique created the Lions sculpture, using the lost-wax technique to represent a lion, a lioness and their two cubs.
