Miguel BERROCAL (1933-2006) - Lot 395
Miguel BERROCAL (1933-2006) A set of two menagères containing cutlery and cups. Note: The fruit of scientific reflection based on his studies in mathematics, physics and architecture, his work enjoyed early renown, enabling him to exhibit throughout Europe and across the Atlantic, as evidenced by his first solo show in Rome in 1958 and his prize at the Biennale des Jeunes de Paris (1966). On the strength of his growing reputation, his ambition was to master the creation of complex works and their quality, and to democratize sculpture through multiples. To achieve this goal, he set up his own foundry, which over time would also become the foundry of many European artists. Continuing to perfect his work and technique, in the late '50s he devoted himself to a new way of thinking about his sculptures, in which a set of parts is interwoven to form a 'work in its own right, with a sometimes hidden mechanism. This technique gave rise to his nickname of "puzzle sculptor". Berrocal's work covers a wide spectrum, from monumental sculpture to micro-sculptures and jewelry. One of his outdoor sculptures can be seen in front of the entrance to the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. The collection presented here comprises over twenty-five of the artist's sculptures. It has been carefully assembled over almost 40 years by an art lover with a passion for the artist.
