Note: He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp under Charles Verlat, whom he assisted for the panoramas The March of the Russian Army and The Battle of Waterloo. He also created sets after Albrecht De Vriendt for the Antwerp Town Hall, and became a professor at the Academy in 1885. He worked mainly in Antwerp and the Kempen region, and traveled to Italy and Spain, but was particularly attached to the Netherlands (Katwijk, Middelburg, Volendam, Veere, Vlissingen, Sluis, Yerseke), frequenting the Spaander Hotel in Volendam, which was also popular with Renoir.
His favorite subjects were villagers in traditional costume, and he produced five engravings for Georges Eekhoud's Les Pittoresques.
