Kifouli DOSSOU (1978)Yoruba woman's head, contemporary sculp - Lot 31
Kifouli DOSSOU (1978)Yoruba woman's head, contemporary sculpture, carved wood, Merina, signed and dated 2021. 14.5 x 32 cm. Note: As a Gèlèdè master craftsman, Kifouli Dossou's skills are rooted in the Fon & Yorùba cultural ideologies, linked by history, tradition and language to the kingdom of Dahomey. The Gèlèdè tradition, one of the jewels in the crown of West Africa, is inscribed by UNESCO on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Kifouli carves exclusively from Merina wood, which he appreciates for its brilliant opalescence, light weight and high strength, making it extremely difficult to work. Kifouli Dossou's impressive carving technique combines exquisite grace with a dazzling tour de force, making him one of Benin's most sought-after master craftsmen.
