Silverware, Leuven, 18th century - Lot 66
Silverware, Leuven, 18th century Large and important tripod coffee pot, solid silver, Louvain and 1771 (Leuven) hallmarks. H +/- 36 cm. Note: For centuries, Brabant was one of the centers of silverware production and use, with Leuven at the heart of this activity. The city's influence extended far beyond its boundaries. Silver produced in nearby towns such as Aarschot, Diest, Tienen and Wavre also bore the Leuven hallmark, giving the concept of Louvain silver a wide scope. The exhibition untangles the geographical web and presents the evolution of fine silverware and the Louvain hallmark. This hallmark represents the city's coat of arms and the key, the attribute of Saint Peter, protector of the city. Both symbols are usually accompanied by the year in figures or letters.
