Rare Allen & Wheelock USA percussion revolverARare Allen & W - Lot 140
Rare Allen & Wheelock USA percussion revolverARare Allen & Wheelock USA percussion revolver, patented April 16, 1845, double-action with large frame, .32 caliber. Manufactured in the late 1850s in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only about 500 examples of this revolver would have been produced in all large frame variants, this one bearing serial number 124. A fine example of a transitional revolver, linking Allen's early "pepperbox" revolvers (with each cylinder chamber having its own barrel) to his later single-barrel models with conventional barrels. This is one of the few early threaded-axis models, with excellent markings, including a deep, crisp scene of hunting dogs chasing a deer. The dog bears the Allen patent date of 1845. Good overall condition, functional mechanism. Proudly shows the marks of time and wear. The metal has developed a beautiful patina and the plates show no cracks or breaks. The barrel is still heavily scratched.
