Alphonse KIABELUA [Luba (DRC), 1927-?] - Lot 2
Alphonse KIABELUA [Luba (DRC), 1927-?] Untitled (market scene). Oil on canvas. 74 x 96.5 cm. Signed middle right, circa 50/60. Alphonse Kiabelua was a pioneering Congolese easel painter, considered one of Congo's first modern artists. After training in Elisabethville and collaborating with the Stanley Pool School, he worked in Leopoldville in the late 1940s with a small group of talented artists. Kiabelua is renowned for his immersive, singular style, combining portraits, often with exaggerated heads inspired by traditional sculpture, and mysterious landscapes, contributing to the emergence of a unique Congolese art form. His work contributed to the rise of easel painting in the country, and some of his early canvases were even acquired by King Baudouin of Belgium, earning him national and international recognition.
