Nkusu Felelo [Bas-Congo, 1914-1995, Kinshasa (DRC)]
(Untitled) Mother and Daughter
Oil on canvas marrouflée on panel. 75.5 x 48.5 cm. Signed and dated 70 lower left.
Nkusu Felelo, one of the pioneers of modern Zairean painting, was born in 1914 in the enclave of Kabinda, Bas-Zaire. He began working at Matadi customs until 1943, after which he was employed by the information department in Kinshasa. In 1945, a meeting with a European painter profoundly awakened his artistic vocation. His natural talent quickly compensated for his lack of formal training. He organized several exhibitions in Matadi and took part in the Brussels World Fair (1958), the first World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar (1966) and the Zaire Art Exhibition in Brussels (1970).
