This is a powerful work by self-taught Congolese painter Tshibumba Kanda Matulu (circa 1947-1981), a leading figure in the "African folk art" movement. His paintings offer a visual account of Congolese history, told from the people's point of view rather than according to colonial or official narratives. An invaluable document of Zaire's tumultuous past, these paintings critique colonial domination and post-independence struggles through a distinctive, accessible style.
