MOKE (Monsengwo Kejwamfi) [Ibe (Bandundu Province), 1950-200 - Lot 72
MOKE (Monsengwo Kejwamfi) [Ibe (Bandundu Province), 1950-2001, Kinshasa (DRC)] King Baudouin and Mobutu parading through the streets of Kinshasa on the occasion of the anniversary of Zaire's independence. Oil on canvas. 96 x 143 cm. Signed and dated 1986 lower left. This vibrant 1986 painting by Moke, a master of Congolese folk art, humorously depicts President Mobutu and King Baudouin marching in pomp through Kinshasa. Cheered on by a jubilant crowd and escorted by swaggering soldiers, the scene is full of color, noise and irony. With his trademark humor, Moke transforms political pomp into a lively street show, part celebration, part satire of power. Moke, whose real name was Monsengwo Kejwamfi, was one of the fathers of the "popular painting" style in Kinshasa. His depictions of urban life attracted attention in 1965, notably when he painted a portrait of General Mobutu. As a chronicler of daily life in Kinshasa, Moke captured its energy, humor and humanity, becoming one of the most celebrated figures in Congolese art.
