Paul SORTET (1905-1966) Portrait of a Tutsi King. Signed Sortet, Astrida and dated 42. 54 x 45 cm. Note: Paul Sortet was a sculptor and painter, trained at the Académie de Bruxelles. Sent to Africa by the Ministry of Colonies in 1939, he toured the whole of the Belgian Congo. The outbreak of war cut him off from his homeland. In 1945, his works, exhibited alongside those of other Congo artists, were shown at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in London. Deeply attached to Africa, Sortet became a planter in Rwanda before returning to Belgium in 1961.
