VOLTAIRE - Lot 168
VOLTAIRE Le dictionnaire philosophique portatif (treatise on tolerance). Geneva (supposedly London). 1764. Bound in full leather. A fine copy. Spine restored, spine slightly split. Very fresh inside. Anonymously published. A major work of Enlightenment thought, emblematic of Voltaire's commitment to fighting intolerance and religious fanaticism. Voltaire, then at the height of his fame, conceived this dictionary as a concise, accessible intellectual weapon designed to disseminate the philisophical and critical ideas of the Enlightenment. The book was published under the title Dictionnaire philosophique portatif, supposedly in London but actually in Geneva, to avoid censorship by the French. "Twenty in-folio volumes will never make a revolution; it's the little portable thirty-cent books that are to be feared." (Voltaire, letter to d'Alembert, 1766).
