Léon FREDERIC (1856-1940) - Lot 54
Léon FREDERIC (1856-1940) Ardennes landscape. Oil on panel, signed and dated 1897 lower right, +/- 29 x 45 cm. Exhibition: exhibition mark on back: "musée de l'hôtel communal de Schaerbeek 2001". Note: Léon Frédéric is one of the great masters of Belgian Symbolism, renowned for the poetic and spiritual power of his work. A pupil of Portaels and influenced by the Flemish and Italian Primitives, he blends realism and idealism in vast triptych compositions such as Les Marchands de craie. A painter of the humble and of popular fervor, he sublimates rural life and the human condition with a unique mystical sensitivity.
