Frans HUYGELEN (1878-1940) - Lot 69
Frans HUYGELEN (1878-1940)
CONGO 1914 - 1918, large bronze medal, signed Fr Huygelen, 9 cm in diameter.
Note: Trained by Thomas Vinçotte at the Higher National Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Frans Huygelen (1878-1940) won the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1900 with Adam and Eve Finding the Body of Abel, before spending time in Italy, France and England. Settling in Brussels in 1904, he received numerous public commissions, notably for commemorative monuments to the First World War, as well as bas-reliefs for the Maison du Heaume (Grand-Place, Brussels), the Louvain Law Courts and the Justin Malfeyt Memorial in Ostend. Faithful to a sober classicism, he puts his chisel at the service of anatomical accuracy and balanced forms. In 1920, he became a professor at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts and a member of the De Scalden artistic circle.
