Press photo from London.
England celebrates its first peace holiday. Whit Monday, the first of England's four annual public holidays since the end of the war in Europe, saw pre-war crowds return to all their favorite haunts. Seaside resorts were packed, while London, with its ever-popular zoo, river trips and the famous Hampstead Fair, provided outdoor entertainment for thousands of families enjoying long periods of glorious sunshine.
The photo shows: part of the huge crowd that attended the Whit Monday greyhound race meeting at clapton stadium, london. The photo shows a British officer being lifted from his jeep by the cheering crowd in Utrecht, celebrating the Allied victory in Europe and their liberation after five years under German rule.
