The advance of Allied troops in 1945, with the recapture of - Lot 373
The advance of Allied troops in 1945, with the recapture of strategic towns and areas: Munich, Mönchengladbach, Lichendorf, progress towards Cologne and the Saar, and the setting up of a field hospital. (Lot of 12 photographs )
Photographs from the Belgian Military Mission.
The set includes a scene showing British troops crossing the border between the Netherlands and Germany: a ruined house and a barbed-wire fence mark the demarcation line; a "Reichsgrenze" sign is the only indication of German territory. In the background is the Reichswald forest, a natural obstacle strongly defended by German forces. A photograph shows a soldier combing the forest (ref. B 14411).
Another scene: the capture of Quadrath, Germany. Infantrymen of the 104th Division, 1st US Army, advance in two columns through the streets of the town after its capture on March 2, 1945. Quadrath, located on the Erft Canal, is about 13 km west of Cologne.
U.S. Signal Corps photograph, ref. ETO-HQ-15-16863.
