Arthur DUPAGNE (1895-1961) - Lot 81
Arthur DUPAGNE (1895-1961) Panther, bronze on marble base, signed. 17 x 24.5 x 10 cm Note: A sculptor trained by Georges Petit and Oscar Berchmans at the Liège Academy of Fine Arts, Arthur Dupagne was deeply influenced by his stay in the Belgian Congo (1927-1935), where he discovered Tchokwe sculpture and the plastic power of Congolese figures. Back in Belgium, he devoted himself to monumental sculpture of African inspiration, which won him major commissions for the 1938 Paris, 1939 New York and 1958 Brussels World's Fairs. His works are held at the Musée de l'Art wallon, the Musée d'Ixelles, the Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale and the Institut de médecine tropicale. Vice-president of the Association des artistes et écrivains africanistes, he remains a benchmark of Belgian Africanist art.
