Keith HARING (1958-1990), Estate of Keith Haring - Lot 132
Keith HARING (1958-1990), Estate of Keith Haring
Surf, Copyright Estate of Keith Haring, cotton carpet, Edition Axis Paris, 52 x 67 cm.
Note: Keith Haring enjoyed dazzling success from his first solo show at Tony Shafrazi Gallery in 1982, a year in which he also took part in documenta 7 in Kassel and became close to the Figuration Libre artists, including Rémi Blanchard and François Boisrond. In 1983, he was exhibited at the Whitney Museum Biennial and the São Paulo Biennial. The following year, he appeared at "Tendances à New York" at the Musée du Luxembourg, then at the Venice Biennale, before working with Robert Combas and Hervé Di Rosa on the monumental frescoes for "Figuration libre, 5/5, France/USA" at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
His international career accelerated, with frescoes in Sydney, Melbourne, Rio, Minneapolis and New York (1984), an intervention at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1986), a painting on the Berlin Wall, followed by prestigious commissions such as Red Dog for Landois in Münster (1987), the fresco at Necker Hospital in Paris (1987) and the label for Château Mouton Rothschild 1988. In 1989, he created Tuttomondo in Pisa, his last public work.
Keen to make his art accessible, Haring opened his Pop Shop in SoHo in 1986, a move supported by Andy Warhol among others. He also collaborated with Madonna, Grace Jones, Timothy Leary and William S. Burroughs, confirming his central role in the art and culture of the 1980s.
