Antique ring - Lot 133
Antique ring Roman composite intaglio bust of Bacchus and Silenus, blue oval convex Nicolo engraved with two heads joined at the base of the neck representing Bacchus and Silenus. A light central line divides the neck and draped bust into two parts. Inspired by coins. Traces of wear. Dimensions: D: 19.1 mm / USA: 91 / 8 / UK: S / 62; 8.4 g. Note: For similar styles, see G.M.A. Richter, Catalogue of engraved gems. Greek-Etruscan-and Roman (The Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York). The ancient Romans considered jewelry to be an essential clothing accessory, as it enabled them to publicly display their wealth. Roman jewelry initially followed Etruscan fashion, using gold and glass beads, but as the Roman Empire grew in size and prosperity, its creations became increasingly elaborate. Provenance: London private collection of Anciner art and jewelry; formerly acquired on the British art market since the 1980s. Note: Certificate enclosed.
