Lucas VAN UDEN (Antwerp 1595-1672 Antwerp) - Lot 10
Lucas VAN UDEN (Antwerp 1595-1672 Antwerp) Animated landscape with horsemen and a stag. Oil on panel. 41 x 63 cm. Signed and dated lower left: Lvcas van Vden / A° 1645. Note: This elegantly composed landscape, animated by a hunting party, testifies to Lucas van Uden's mastery of Flemish landscape painting. Together with its now lost counterpart, it was presented in 1965 at the exhibition "Le siècle de Rubens" at the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. The two paintings can be found in the photographic archives of the RKD, The Hague, under the lite image numbers 68348 and 68347. Like his contemporaries Peter Paul Rubens, Jan Brueghel the Elder and David Teniers, Uden was a keen observer of nature. Most of his paintings are inspired by sketches made by van Uden during excursions in the Antwerp region. His style was strongly influenced by the innovative landscapes of Rubens, in whose studio he worked for a time. Although van Uden often collaborated with other artists, notably David Teniers the Younger and Jan Wildens, the landscape and figures are probably his own. Provenance: Belgian private collection Exhibition: Le siècle de Rubens, Musées Royaux Des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, October 15 - December 12, 1965, cat.no. 282a and its counterpart cat.no. 282b with illustration.
