Louis ROBBE (1806-1887) - Lot 26
Louis ROBBE (1806-1887) Cows, sheep and goats in a Flanders landscape. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, 52 x 65 cm. Note: Louis-Marie-Dominique-Romain Robbe (Courtrai, 1806 - 1887) was the son of Dominique Robbe and the brother of painter Henri Robbe. A pupil of Jean van de Wiele at the Dathis brothers' boarding school, he attended the Kortrijk Academy (1820-1824), then studied law at Ghent University, where in 1830 he defended a thesis on divorce. After serving as justice of the peace in Moorseele, he became a lawyer at the Kortrijk bar, then, from 1840, in Brussels for the Ministry of Finance. In 1833, under the guidance of Jan Baptiste de Jonghe and a pupil of Eugène Verboeckhoven, he turned to painting. In 1834, together with Spruyt, he founded the Société des Beaux-Arts in Kortrijk and contributed to the Analectes des Flandres. A friend of the Spanish painter Jenaro Pérez Villaamil, from 1843 he campaigned for closer ties between the Belgian and Spanish schools. A precursor of modern painting in Belgium, he ran a studio in Brussels, training Edouard Woutermaertens and Laurent De Beul, and protecting Charles de Groux. An active exhibitor, he again took part in the Brussels Salon in 1881.
