Otto BACHE (1839-1927) - Lot 27
Otto BACHE (1839-1927) Horse and carriage, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1878 lower left, 47 x 63 cm. Note: A Danish painter trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he was a pupil of Wilhelm Marstrand, Otto Bache quickly established himself as a recognized artist, receiving several awards from the institution. Initially a portraitist, he developed a marked interest in animal painting and genre scenes, which he treated with a keen sense of observation and great technical mastery. His stay in Paris, followed by a trip to Italy, marked a turning point in his work, which gained in freedom and chromatic richness, nourished by the study of Old Masters such as Giorgione and Titian. In his animal compositions, Bache followed a European tradition that could be compared to the work of Rosa Bonheur or Constant Troyon, combining naturalistic precision with a sense of mise-en-scène. Back in Copenhagen, he enjoyed great success and received numerous commissions. Member of the Academy in 1872, professor in 1887, then director in 1905, he played a central role in Danish painting at the end of the 19th century, at the crossroads of the academic tradition and a sensibility more open to European influences.
