Alfred T. BASTIEN (1873-1955) - Lot 36
Alfred T. BASTIEN (1873-1955) L'atelier du peintre, oil on canvas, signed, 90 x 70cm. Note: A Belgian painter born in Ixelles and active mainly in Brussels, Alfred Bastien trained at the Ghent and Brussels academies with Jean Delvin and Jean-François Portaels, before perfecting his training in Paris, where he studied the works of Gustave Courbet and Eugène Delacroix. Influenced by Impressionism, he developed a style of painting attentive to the effects of light, marked by a discreet luminism, particularly evident in his landscapes and watercolors. A founding member of the Le Sillon group, he was part of the Belgian artistic revival of the late 19th century. As a traveler, he spent time in North Africa, the Congo and Asia, experiences that nourished his work. He is particularly noted for his large panoramic compositions, including Panorama du Congo (1913), produced with Paul Mathieu, and Panorama de la bataille de l'Yser (1920-1921). A war artist during the First World War, he joined the Belgian army's artistic section and produced numerous battle scenes, notably with Canadian troops. After the war, he pursued an important institutional career, becoming professor and then director at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. A recognized figure on the Belgian art scene, Alfred Bastien's work is at the crossroads of landscape, monumental painting and historical testimony.
