Ion THEODORESCU SION (1882-1939) - Lot 42
Ion THEODORESCU SION (1882-1939) Three Young Women, oil on panel, signed lower left, stamped on the back "Galeria de Pictura, Cosinzana Bucarest Str. Academiei no 15 Bucuresti" and "1271" and noted 1862, 60 x 50 cm. Note: Major Romanian painter and draughtsman, trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens and Luc-Olivier Merson. Initially influenced by Impressionism, he gradually developed a personal plastic language at the crossroads of Post-Impressionism, Divisionism and the avant-garde, incorporating influences from Paul Cézanne, André Derain and Georges Braque. His work is characterized by a constant focus on the Romanian rural world, which he interprets in a spirit that is both primitivist and spiritual, blending popular traditions with formal modernity. Some of his compositions, with their simplification of form, flat construction and decorative dimension, are reminiscent of the work of the Nabis group. As a member of the Tinerimea Artistică group, he played an active role in the emergence of a Romanian modernism free of academic codes. A war artist, he gained increasing recognition during the interwar period, notably for his monumental compositions and Balcic landscapes. In the 1920s, his work shifted towards a neo-traditionalist and neo-Byzantine aesthetic, with links to the intellectual circles of the Gândirea magazine. At the crossroads of Western influences and an assertive return to national roots, Ion Theodorescu-Sion established himself as an essential figure in the construction of Romanian artistic identity in the 20th century.
