ARMAN (1928-2005) - Lot 67
ARMAN (1928-2005) Masque Punu, Gabon, gouache on paper, signed. Handwritten inscription on the back: "Provenance, atelier de l'artiste". 34 x 21 cm on view. Note: Born in Nice, France, and died in New York, Arman established himself as one of the major figures of 20th-century art, and a central player in the Nouveaux Réalistes movement, founded alongside Yves Klein at the instigation of critic Pierre Restany. Early on, he developed a radical artistic language, integrating manufactured objects directly into his works, which he saw as natural extensions of the human hand. He made a name for himself with his famous "accumulations", assemblages of everyday objects (watches, instruments, garbage) that forcefully reveal the production and consumption mechanisms of modern society. His work is part of a profound reflection on the materiality, repetition and memory of objects, in dialogue with the experiments of his contemporaries such as César and Jean Tinguely. Based between Nice, Vence and New York, Arman's international career is marked by major exhibitions and public commissions. An avid collector, particularly of African art, he nourished his work with a keen eye for objects and their symbolic charge, making him a key artist of modernity.
