Georges MATHIEU (1921-2012) - Lot 71
Georges MATHIEU (1921-2012) Dedicated black marker drawing by Georges Mathieu, enhanced by a fragment of burgundy felt-tip pen applied to the surface. This drawing appeared in Le Privilège d'être, Forcalquier, Robert Morel, 1967, original edition, copy marked "hors commerce". Note: A major figure in lyrical abstraction, Georges Mathieu began developing gestural painting in the 1940s, based on rapid execution and energetic strokes. A precursor of a European form of Action Painting, he experimented very early on with processes akin to dripping, in parallel with the research of Jackson Pollock. Known for his spectacular public performances in the 1950s, he imposed an immediate, instinctive style of painting. Consecrated in 1963 by a retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, he remains an essential figure of post-war abstraction.
