Leopold PLOMTEUX (1920-2008) - Lot 72
Leopold PLOMTEUX (1920-2008) Abstract composition, gouache on paper, 1960/70, 55 x 36.5 cm. Provenance: Carrefour gallery, Brussels. Note: A Belgian painter born in Flémalle, Léopold Plomteux trained at the Institut Saint-Luc and then at the Académie royale des beaux-arts de Liège, where he studied under Auguste Mambour. At the heart of the post-war Belgian avant-garde, he helped found the Réalité Cobra group alongside Georges Collignon and Pol Bury, before joining the Art abstrait movement. His work is part of a free search for plasticity, marked by experimentation and abstraction. A scholarship student in Paris in the early 1950s, he immersed himself in contemporary European trends, nurturing an open, evolving artistic practice. Parallel to his production, he played an active role in artistic life in Wallonia, notably through the creation of workshops and his institutional involvement. Today, his works are held in several public collections, including Belgium's Royal Museums of Fine Arts, confirming his place in the Belgian art scene of the 20th century.
