Maurice WYCKAERT (1923-1996) - Lot 76
Maurice WYCKAERT (1923-1996) La vallée en lambeaux, gouache on cardboard, signed and dated 66 lower right, +/- 55 x 64.5 cm. Note: He studied at the Brussels Academy (1940-47, 1949-50), at Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and at the Vrije Atelier in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. His early still-life work was reminiscent of Jean Brusselmans, before becoming inspired by William Turner and James Ensor. In 1955, Wyckaert turned to lyrical abstraction, influenced by oriental calligraphy. He received the Jules Raeymaekers Prize, an honorable mention from JPB (1957) and at the São Paulo Biennial (1961). A member of the Présence movement, co-founder of De Meridiaan and the Taptoe Center (Brussels), he joined the Situationist International in 1957 alongside Guy Debord and Asger Jorn, with whom he remained close despite his expulsion in 1961. On September 28, 1960, he read the Declaration of the IVth SI Conference at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. In the 1970s, he made a name for himself with his gouaches, etchings and lithographs. He was chosen to decorate the Jacques Brel metro station in Brussels. His works can be found in museums in Brussels, Ghent, Marche-en-Famenne, Ostend, Tournai, Schiedam, Silkeborg, Helsinki, Vienna, Lausanne and São Paulo.
