Mathurin MOREAU (1822-1912) - Lot 205
Mathurin MOREAU (1822-1912) Les sœurs, sculpture, bronze, signed on red marble base, H+- 66cm excluding base. Note: Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912), a French sculptor from a dynasty of artists, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studios of Jules Ramey and Auguste Dumont. Winner of the second Prix de Rome in 1842, he made his debut at the Salon des artistes français in 1848, where he distinguished himself with L'Élégie. A major figure in Second Empire decorative sculpture, he worked closely with the Fonderie du Val d'Osne, of which he became administrator, and also supplied models to the Compagnie des bronzes de Bruxelles. His work was part of the development of publishing bronzes, very much in vogue under Napoleon III. He won awards at the 1855 and 1878 Universal Exhibitions, and was awarded a medal of honor at the Salon in 1897. At the same time, he pursued a public career as mayor of the 19th arrondissement of Paris from 1879. Chevalier, then officier de la Légion d'honneur, he left an abundant body of work, emblematic of the ornamental and allegorical sculpture of the second half of the 19th century.
