Egypt, Cairo, 20th century, tray with the names of Allah (As - Lot 207
Egypt, Cairo, 20th century, tray with the names of Allah (Asma al-Husna) Large silver-gilt metal tray, finely chased and engraved, richly decorated with Arabic calligraphy. The surface is decorated with a succession of poly-lobed cartouches inscribed with divine names (Asma al-Husna) such as al-mulk, al-ḥaqq, al-wāḥid, al-wadūd, al-'alī, al-rāziq, al-fattāḥ, al-'azīz, al-ghaniyy, al-laṭīf, al-qawiyy and al-ḥayy, arranged in a circular frieze. The center features a star medallion with radiating calligraphic decoration, surrounded by finely executed geometric and vegetal registers. The ensemble bears witness to the elaborate decorative work typical of Cairo's artisanal production for bourgeois interiors and the international market. Egyptian work, probably Cairo (Heliopolis), mid-20th century. Diameter: 72 cm. Provenance: Verhulst family, engineer/architect of the Heliopolis construction site (Cairo).
