Seni Awa CAMARA (1945) - Lot 241
Seni Awa CAMARA (1945) Maternity, Terracotta sculpture. Height : 35 cm. Width: 15 cm. Length : 15 cm. Note : A Senegalese sculptor and potter from Casamance, Seyni Awa Camara has developed a singular body of work, at the crossroads of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary creation. Introduced to pottery techniques by her mother and grandmother in the 1960s, she quickly developed her own personal language, producing fire-fired terracotta figures in her backyard in Bignona, which are distributed locally. A member of the first generation of the École de Dakar while remaining profoundly independent, she created an abundant universe of human, animal and hybrid figures, sometimes associated with maternal themes. Her international recognition began with her participation in the Magiciens de la Terre exhibition at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette. Several of his works became part of France's national collections, now housed at the musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, which paid tribute to him on the occasion of his death. Through the freedom of her imagination and the expressive power of her forms, Seyni Awa Camara has established herself as a major figure in contemporary African sculpture.
