Attributed to Jacques LE MOYNE de MORGUES (Dieppe 1533 - Lon - Lot 96
Attributed to Jacques LE MOYNE de MORGUES (Dieppe 1533 - London 1588) Hyacinth from Peru. Watercolor gouache over black pencil lines. 22 x 13 cm (irregular shape). Doubled drawing, slightly oiled, small stains. The annotation is similar to that on a drawing by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues sold at Sotheby's in New York on January 21, 2004, no. 45. In addition, the gouache watercolor technique is very similar to many of the studies drawn by Le Moyne de Morgues. Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues is best known for the portraits of Indians he painted during his expedition with René de Laudonnière to Florida in 1564 as cartographer and illustrator. He escaped the Spanish massacre of the French in September 1565, and on his return to Europe, faced with the threat of the Wars of Religion, he took refuge in London, where he devoted the rest of his career to painting flowers and fruit. Our three studies are fine examples of the technical prowess of this little-known artist. Expert : Cabinet de BAYSER.
