French school, circa 1620 - Lot 99
French school, circa 1620 Large portrait of Ambroise Paré (1510 - 1590). Black pencil on blue paper. 19.5 x 15.3 cm. Titled upper right. Freckling, tear top left (5.5 cm) and small holes. Annotated in black pencil on verso: "Portrait d'Ambroise Paré, chirurgien, gravé par Stephanus Anno 1582". Annotated on the back of the frame: "Cabinet Destailleur /TL Lagneau/Ambroise PARE /". Provenance: former Destailleur collection, fourth sale, May 22, 1896, part of lot 829. Ambroise Paré is credited with revolutionizing surgery; he was a "battle surgeon" and perfected artery ligation to prevent hemorrhaging, which had previously been treated with branding iron. As firearms evolved, so did the way in which they were treated. He was physician to both the poorest and the richest (Henri II, François II, Anne de Montmorency, Antoine de Bourbon, etc.). He published numerous medical treatises in French. This portrait of the great surgeon is familiar to us thanks to the engraving by Etienne Delaune, known as Stephanus, to illustrate the "Discours d'Ambroise Paré ... de la licorne...Paris", Buon, 1582. We know of two other engravings inspired by Delaune's, by E. Vallé (1585) and G.Horbeck (1607). Expert : Cabinet de BAYSER
