Kifouli DOSSOU (1978) - Lot 46
Kifouli DOSSOU (1978)
Yoruba Woman’s Head, contemporary sculpture, carved wood, Merina, signed and dated 2021. 14.5 x 32 cm. Note: As a master craftsman of the Gèlèdè tradition, Kifouli Dossou grounds his craftsmanship in the Fon and Yorùba cultural traditions, inherited from the Kingdom of Dahomey and closely linked by history, language, and ritual practices. The Gèlèdè tradition, considered one of West Africa’s great cultural heritages, is recognized by UNESCO and inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Kifouli Dossou works exclusively with Merina wood, a rare species prized for its luminous opalescence, lightness, and great strength, but known to be particularly challenging to carve. His remarkable technical mastery is characterized by a balance of finesse, elegance, and virtuosity, making him one of Benin’s most sought-after artisans.
