MOKE (1950–2001) - Lot 136
MOKE (1950–2001) “Biliaki Biso Bikoki” (The Pileup), oil on canvas, signed and dated “92” in the lower left corner, 130 x 160 cm. Note: Moke, whose full name is Monsengwo Kejwamfi, is one of the founding figures of the “popular painting” style in Kinshasa. His depictions of city life attracted attention in 1965, particularly when he painted a portrait of General Mobutu. As a chronicler of daily life in Kinshasa, Moke captured its energy, humor, and humanity, becoming one of the most famous figures in Congolese art.
