Seyni Awa CAMARA, Seni Awa CAMARA (1945–2026) - Lot 158
Seyni Awa CAMARA, Seni Awa CAMARA (1945–2026) Woman on a Moped, terracotta sculpture. 48 x 15 x 42 cm. Note: A Senegalese sculptor and potter from Casamance, Seyni Awa Camara developed a unique body of work that bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art. Introduced to pottery techniques by her mother and grandmother in the 1960s, she quickly developed a personal artistic language, producing fire-fired terracotta figures in her courtyard in Bignona that were sold locally. Associated with the first generation of the Dakar School while remaining deeply independent, she created a rich universe populated by human, animal, or hybrid figures, sometimes linked to themes of motherhood. Her international recognition grew following her participation in the exhibition *Magiciens de la Terre* at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette. Several of her works were subsequently acquired by French national collections and are now housed at the Musée du quai Branly —Jacques Chirac, who paid tribute to her upon her passing. Through the freedom of her imagination and the expressive power of her forms, Seyni Awa Camara established herself as a major figure in contemporary African sculpture.
