Youssef El Khorib, known as YOUCHA (1963) - Lot 160
Youssef El Khorib, known as YOUCHA (1963) Untitled, oil on canvas, signed lower left, 70 x 93 cm. Note: Youssef El Khorib, known as Youcha, was born in Morocco in 1963 and lives in the medina of Assilah. Youcha captures the viewer’s attention with his strange works composed of various materials, including fabrics, canvases, and papers… The external and imaginary worlds seem to revel in a kind of jubilation filled with faces, symbols, minarets, boats, donkeys, and the ever-present Hand of Fatima. His paintings express a way of perceiving everyday life that bears no resemblance to commonplace trivialities. His world constantly shifts between dream and reality.

Youcha is a self-taught artist, but he has been painting his whole life, his eyes wide open and fixed on the church steeple that stands right next to the neighborhood’s minaret. Beyond that lies the ocean and those rickety boats in which young people, ten, twenty, or thirty at a time, set sail in search of European paradises. There is also the newspaper vendor, life in the narrow streets that have been encircled for five centuries by imposing Portuguese ramparts, and the crackling of the radio, which relentlessly lists the dead—those who drowned between the African coast and Gibraltar… His works are sold by Galerie Samet (France). The Belgian critic Jean-Pierre Van Thiegem has written about this artist and provided the foreword to one of his exhibitions in Belgium (Galerie Art en marge, Rue Haute, Brussels, 2004).
