Jacques LE MOYNE de MORGUES (Dieppe 1533 – London 1588), att - Lot 2
Jacques LE MOYNE de MORGUES (Dieppe 1533 – London 1588), attributed to Jacinthe du Pérou. Watercolor with gouache over black pencil lines. 22 x 13 cm (irregular shape). The drawing is doubled, slightly sun-faded, with small spots. Bears an annotation, in another hand in pen and brown ink, in the lower right corner: “Jasinte perú.” The annotation is similar to the one found on a drawing by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues that was sold at Sotheby’s in New York on January 21, 2004, lot no. 45. Furthermore, the gouache-watercolor technique is very similar to that of many studies drawn by Le Moyne de Morgues. Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues is best known for his portraits of Native Americans, which he created during his expedition with René de Laudonnière to Florida in 1564, where he served as a cartographer and illustrator. He escaped the massacre of the French by the Spanish in September 1565, and upon his return to Europe, faced with the threat of the Wars of Religion, he took refuge in London, where he devoted the rest of his career to painting flowers and fruits. Our three studies are fine examples of the technical prowess of this artist, who remains so little recognized. Expert: BAYSER Gallery.
