Southern Netherlands, 18th century - Lot 34
Southern Netherlands, 18th century Saint Joseph Holding the Infant Jesus. A statuette carved in the round from boxwood (or fruitwood). The saint stands with his head bowed, tenderly pressing the naked Child—whom he supports with both hands—against his cheek; the Child, nestled against him, rests one hand on his chest. Joseph, bearded, with wavy hair falling down his neck, is dressed in a tunic and a loose-fitting cloak with deep, angular folds, one panel of which cascades down his side. Cylindrical base made of turned and carved wood, from a later period: smooth shaft encircled by a twisted molding, circular plinth with a frieze of water leaves, and a foliated cornice; the shaft forms a box containing a document—"a piece of cloth that touched the bones of Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort." A section is missing from the plinth on the back of the base; wear, including at the top of the head H 17 cm
