Ernest Baptiste LEVEILLE (1841–1913), attributed to - Lot 51
Ernest Baptiste LEVEILLE (1841–1913), attributed to Asian-style covered pot made of blown, bubbled glass with polychrome inclusions; handle and lid in chiseled brass with gilded floral decoration. Also attributable to François Eugène ROUSSEAU. Bears a label from L’Escalier de Cristal: “Escalier de Cristal – Pannier-Lahoche & Cie - 6 rue Scribe & rue Auber 1 - Paris,” Circa 1875–1885. H approx. 27 cm Note: Founded in Paris in 1804, L’Escalier de Cristal was one of the most prestigious houses of decorative arts in the 19th century. Taken over notably by Pannier Frères, it played a major role in the development of Japonism in the French decorative arts, drawing on designers such as Édouard Lièvre, Eugène Rousseau, Gabriel Viardot, Émile Gallé, and Louis Majorelle. This vase is part of the luxurious and refined collection produced at the height of the Japonism craze.
