Léon SPILLIAERT (1881–1946) - Lot 85
Léon SPILLIAERT (1881–1946) Trees in Spring, May 1917. Pencil, watercolor, and gouache on paper. Signed and dated “L. Spilliaert / May 1917” in the upper right corner. 40.9 × 28.3 cm, sheet. 39.7 × 27.2 cm (image area). Provenance: Artist’s family, Brussels. Private collection, Brussels; acquired from a gallery on Rue Ernest Allard in 1994, then passed down through the family until 2026. Attached documents: This work will be included in the Léon Spilliaert catalog raisonné currently being prepared by Anne Adriaens-Pannier. Certificate by Philippe Serck, court-appointed expert, DSD Art Companions Ltd, dated April 16, 1994. Note: On the reverse, the annotation “1917/25” in the hand of Madeleine Spilliaert, the artist’s daughter. Dated May 1917, this composition depicts a forest undergrowth punctuated by the tall, dark vertical lines of the tree trunks and foliage rendered with a multitude of colorful brushstrokes, giving the entire scene a luminous, almost pointillist quality. We thank Ms. Anne Adriaens-Pannier for the information she provided and for her advice regarding the inclusion of this work in the catalogue raisonné currently in preparation.
