Henri Jean PONTOY (1888–1968) - Lot 88
Henri Jean PONTOY (1888–1968) “Woman with a Yellow Headdress,” oil on canvas, signed lower right, 39 x 31 cm. Note: Henri Pontoy trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Luc-Olivier Merson’s studio and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d’Automne, and the Salon des Artistes Orientalistes Algériens. In 1926, he was awarded a fellowship by the Colonial Society of French Artists and traveled to Tunisia (where he joined the Tunisian Salon), then to Morocco and French West Africa. Around 1930, he lived in Ouarzazate and met Jacques Majorelle; he then taught at the Moulay Idriss High School in Fez and received the Grand Prize of the City of Algiers in 1933. After 1947, he returned to Guinea, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon with Majorelle, where he won the Cameroon Prize in 1951. His luminous and colorful paintings established him as one of the last great representatives of interwar Orientalism.
