Kurt PEISER (1887–1962) - Lot 100
Kurt PEISER (1887–1962) Sleeping Cat, charcoal on paper, signed lower right, 16.5 x 18 cm (view size) Note: A Belgian painter, draftsman, and printmaker, Kurt Peiser trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp before becoming a student of Gerard Jacobs. A realist painter with Impressionist and Expressionist influences, he focused on scenes of everyday life, ports, seascapes, and—in Brussels—life in the Marolles neighborhood, describing himself as the “painter of the people.” A member of L’Élan, he began exhibiting in 1907 in Brussels and Antwerp, and later notably at the Venice Biennale in 1924, at the Galerie Georges Giroux in 1929, and at the Belgian Art exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad in 1938. A renowned printmaker, he served on the Committee for Original Belgian Prints alongside Maurice Langaskens, Pierre Paulus, Armand Rassenfosse, Émile-Henry Tilmans, and Louis Titz. His works are included in the collections of the British Museum, the Hermitage Museum, the Jewish Museum of Belgium, and the Belgian government, among others.
