Shizu Shimada (1923–2021) - Lot 122
Shizu Shimada (1923–2021) Abstract composition, mixed media, signed and dated 1965 in the lower right corner, 27 x 36.5 cm Note: Born in 1923 in Karafuto, Shizu Shimada graduated in 1942 from the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo Women’s Art School (now Joshibi University of Art and Design). She then studied the history of Eastern art at Waseda University under the poet and calligrapher Yaichi Aizu. After winning awards three consecutive years at the Niki-kai, she moved to Paris in 1958, where she established herself at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon de Mai and participated in the 1962 exhibition “Japanese Painters in Paris” at the Musée Galliera. She was among the artists represented by the Minami Gallery in Tokyo, a pioneering gallery of the Japanese avant-garde founded by Kusuo Shimizu, who also introduced Fautrier, Sam Francis, and Tinguely to Japan. The poet Makoto Ōoka, a leading figure in Japanese literature and recipient of the Order of Culture, praised the refined elegance of her work; together with writer Bernard Noël and Kunio Motoe, he dedicated the monograph *Shimada Shizu: Bouquet for Shizu* (Tokyo, 2004) to her. Upon her return to Japan in 1978, she continued her work independently, dividing her time between Zushi and Paris. Her colorful and rhythmic abstraction, which combines Japanese tradition with Western formal rigor, earned her the 15th Yasushi Inoue Cultural Prize. Her works are included in the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and the Yokosuka Museum of Art, among others.
