Jacques VILLON (1875–1963) - Lot 126
Jacques VILLON (1875–1963) "Composition (1953)," Drawing, gouache, 6-color stencil on vellum, signed lower right, 28.5 x 18.5 cm Note: A French painter, draftsman, and printmaker—whose real name was Gaston Duchamp—Jacques Villon was the eldest of the famous Duchamp-Villon siblings, which included Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Marcel Duchamp, and Suzanne Duchamp. Trained in printmaking from a young age by his grandfather Émile Frédéric Nicolle, he initially established a prolific career as an illustrator and printmaker in Paris. Beginning in the 1910s, his work evolved toward an artistic exploration deeply influenced by Cubism, particularly focusing on the decomposition of forms, geometric construction, and the representation of movement. Notably, he participated in the Salon de la Section d’Or in 1912, alongside several major artists of the Cubist avant-garde. His work as an engraver remains particularly significant, notably his famous interpretations of works by Cézanne and Manet.
